This show is super cute, I haven't even finished watching it and I knew it deserved a review.
It's British but takes place in California, so if you're anything like me and can't keep up with smart, British shows because of the accent, this one won't be as much of an issue. Only the three main guys have accents.
Sam Robertson plays Flynn, the lead. He's got ALS and as a last ditch effort to make the most of his life he and his two best friends go to America to work at a summer camp. They get stuck being counselors to the "chunk bunk" a group of overweight outcasts who truly make the show.
Flynn is a little of a womanizer and chases girls. Barry, played by Jon Dagleish, immediately falls for Kimberley, although she has a boyfriend, Jake, and he tries to get her the whole time. A-Rab falls for Rachael, the good girl christian, and they become a couple even though he's not over his ex Sima.
Honestly, the love triangles are great but second to the boys of the chunk bunk. You have one who thinks he's ghetto even though his name is Hilary. You have Jizz who is a chronic masturbator that doesn't speak. Brandon, who used to be in the jock bunk but gained a ton of weight and is now with the fat group (check his new look in season 2). Thurston is adorable as well.
Season 2 changes it up a little bit. The show started out as a miniseries, and had a definite ending after the first 6 episodes but they decided to continue it for another season. A few of the character don't come back (it kind of ruins the chunk bunk) but many are back for more fun.

Bachelorette review
Posted : 11 years, 7 months ago on 12 May 2013 02:18 (A review of Bachelorette)I might be out of touch but I only vaguely remember hearing about this movie. I've never seen another Rebel Wilson movie but I thought that this one was kind of a waste of her comedic genius. She was the least funny of all the characters.
Rebel plays Becky, one of four girls who went to school together, the others played by Lizzy Caplan, Kirsten Dunst and Isla Fisher. First let me say that while I love the other two, I really haven't liked anything Kirsten has done since I was a teen and obsessed with crazy/beautiful. I have to say she looked amazing in this, really grown up and without the stringy/dirty hair. I digress...
Becky tells Regan (Dunst) that she's getting married. Secretly Regan is pissed because the fat friend is the first to get married in the group. Regan is very Type-A and has her wedding planned out even though she's more about her career than her man.
She tells Gena (Caplan) and Katie (Fisher) and they all go for the wedding weekend. Lizzy and Isla are hilarious as basically oversize children who love to party and have never grown up. They're intent on throwing Becky a bachelorette weekend even though she has outgrown that lifestyle. When Gena brings cocaine, Katie, in her excitement yells out "you brought cocaine" in the middle of the hotel lobby. That was hilarious.
Anyway, you see through out the hijinks (including ruining the wedding dress when Katie and Regan both climb in it to prove that Becky is ginormous) Regan learns to relax a little and Gena and Katie learn to grow up. They don't come out perfect but they realize a lot about themselves when they see Becky all grown up.
Beware that this movie is not for the close minded as they do a lot of drugs/drinking and talk about hookups and abortions a lot. I liked this because it was relatable even though I do not do these things many people my age do. The guys were pretty funny too.

Lay the Favorite review
Posted : 11 years, 7 months ago on 12 May 2013 01:59 (A review of Lay the Favorite)I didn't know if I would like this movie but a lot of the actors interested me so I thought I'd give it a shot. It was there, so I watched it.
I thought Rebecca Hall did great. I liked her in The Town and was interested to see her other work. She's great at playing an immature character who hasn't really figured out what she wants to do with her life. She stumbles upon a job placing bets for a bookie in Vegas played by Bruce Willis. She has a thing for numbers and she really excels at the job and learns to love it. Naturally, she starts having an attraction to her boss who's named Dink which makes it all the more funny. His wife finds out about their attraction and makes him fire her. The wife is played by Catherine Zeta Jones who is also wonderful in the movie. Watch it into the credits and you will see some amazing dancing skills by CZJ. Dink calls his wife the Jinx because every time she's around he starts to lose and Beth (Rebecca Hall) would be his lucky charm if he believed in such things.
After she stops working with Dink she moves to NYC and stumbles into a person who wants to bet but doesn't know a bookie. She takes her bets to Dink's competition Vince Vaughn who plays Rosie. While the betting that Dink does is legal in Vegas, doing the same thing in NYC with Rosie is illegal and Vince Vaughn's character is pretty wacky, with a speech impediment and crazy personality. He's trying to set up his business in the Caribbean where it is legal so Joshua Jackson, who plays Rebecca's NYC BF after she leaves Dink, ends up making bets for her there while she's in the islands with Rosie.
They all end up in a mess when one of the guys can't pay his tab and tells them that the feds are after him and they're all in trouble. He's not taking her calls and acting crazy but if Beth doesn't get the money for Rosie she will not get paid all the money he owes her. She hatches up a plan to make it happen.
You have to watch it to see the ending but everyone comes together to get the money and try to make it work. But it's a good ending that I liked a lot. It's a little predictable but I think it works for this type of movie.

True Awesomeness
Posted : 12 years, 4 months ago on 14 August 2012 11:15 (A review of True Blood)I probably mentioned before how I'm not a big follower of the shows everyone likes, I usually don't end up liking them. My friend sent me home with Seasons 2 and 3 so I downloaded Season 1. I haven't stopped watching them since. At this point my only complaint is that practically everyone is some kind of supernatural being, I would much rather have more humans on the show.
I've always been interested in Supernatural things and this show does a great job of making the stories interesting enough that even those who don't like that kind of thing could still like the show. It's a lot like a soap opera with a lot more blood.
The real life storylines are interesting and I love the love triangles and heartbreaks that the people go through. I like that there are gay characters and it's not a big deal even though the show takes place in the conservative South. I like the wide variety of characters on the show and ttheir beliefs on Vampire/Human relations. It's not black and white, there are many shades of gray.
Sookie is adorable, I'm not going to lie. Her energy is amazing even though she had to grow on me. Still, I don't understand why EVERY single guy on the show wants her. Someone needs to hate the girl for God's sake. If I had to pick I think she should be with Alcide because Bill is boring, Eric's crazy and Sam is unstable (and better in his current storyline).
Lafayette is my favorite character, followed closely by Tara. They have great storylines although I'm not too sure about Lafayette now but I do want to know where they're going to go.
Also interesting is the maker/vampire dynamic and Kristen Bauer as Pam is amazing as Eric's protegee. I think her character would be the most fun to play. She's a little crazy, always tells it how it is and has kinky sex with every female that walks. Love it!
I can't wait to see where they go with this show and I will be watching closely. It's great to see a show that's a fan favorite actually live up to it's hype in my eyes.

Better than Grey's Anatomy
Posted : 12 years, 4 months ago on 14 August 2012 11:04 (A review of Private Practice)I may have done it out of order when I watched Private Practice before I watched Grey's. I always liked Addison and she's a much more complex character than her ex-husband and his new wife. She knows what she wants and she goes after it. She wants a baby more than she wants a husband, more than she wants a medical career and she goes for it. That is what all people should aspire to.
Overall, I like all of the characters in their own ways. Naomi has strong opinions and a moral compass that I may not always agree with but I love that her friendship with Addison can survive things like that (at least most of the time).
Sam and Addison have always had a complicated relationship that only gets more complicated when a baby is involved. I can't wait to see where that goes.
Pete and Violet make an awful couple but I think that is what happens in real life. They want to make it work so badly but it just isn't. They gave it a try. The characters are real and that's what makes the audience like them.
At first I wasn't rooting for Charlotte and Cooper but their storyline is so interesting and fascinating that I had to get on board. I love the realistic way they love each other and his child. I think their storyline is the best lately and one of the main reasons I watch even though I can't stand Kadee Strickland's Southern accent. Cooper is a very normal guy that you don't normally see on TV, all the guys are. The characters aren't cookie-cutter which makes it much more interesting to sit down and watch.
I do take issue with the way some story lines are dropped but I think that has more to do with the actors coming and going than the writing. I can understand that. We'll have to see how the deal with those issues in Season 6 and I can't wait.

Mediocrity
Posted : 12 years, 4 months ago on 14 August 2012 10:54 (A review of Grey's Anatomy)This show is plain and simple mediocre. I had to watch it because of the hype surrounding it and even then it took me until after season 8 to start watching it on Netflix. I understand that the show is supposed to be more about the people than the medicine but it annoys me that storylines are dropped when you don't know the outcome of some of the patients. The show always seems to cut out when things are dramatic with the patients and it kills it for me.
Everyone loves the storyline between Izzie and Denny and I would have to agree because Jeffrey Dean Morgan did such a wonderful job in the role. I never really fell for Izzie.
Dr.'s Shepard and Grey are ANNOYING. I don't think they are a good couple and they are the least interesting part of the show. I don't see how a show can have a lame storyline with it's main characters. I could care less what happens to them.
I think the best characters are Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Owen. They are the best, most realistic couple. Callie and Arizona are an accurate depiction of a lesbian couple. I like that Callie's parents have problems with her lifestyle and Arizona's accepted her for what she was. That is real and interesting.
Eric Dane does a great job as the manwhore with a heart. You feel for him and he's a great actor.
In general there is too much that I just don't care about. I think I would like to see more about the patients and I want to see the tough conversations, I want more REAL drama and less of the surface stuff.

Magic Mike review
Posted : 12 years, 5 months ago on 27 July 2012 03:12 (A review of Magic Mike)I didn't have high expectations for this film to be honest. How can someone sit through an entire movie dedicated to male strippers, usually a cheesy display to say the least. Well, I'll tell you I thought this movie was great. There was an actual storyline and I found myself actually rooting for the guys and hoping that they would want to stay strippers instead of turning their lives around and getting "real" jobs.
The stripping is second to the storyline in the background involving Alex Pettyfer, Channing Tatum and Cody Horn. Cody and Alex play brother and sister and Channing's character helps Alex break into the business all the while falling for his sister. It's actually a cute story although I wish the role had gone to another actress, Cody was rather dull, not overly attractive and I wasn't actually sure I wanted her to have the happy ending with Channing.
Many movie goers were disappointed by the amount of drugs and alcohol in the movie but what do you expect, real strippers would be the same way, I'm sure. Not that I've actually met a stripper in real life, not to my knowledge anyway.
All in all, I have to say I will be purchasing the DVD when it comes out, a huge rarity for me. Some of the dance scenes were cheesy and cringe inducing but Channing Tatum (who I was not a huge fan of before seeing the movie) did an AMAZING job, I'm pretty sure if male strippers all danced like this then business would be booming. Joe Manganeillo is adorable and funny and I loved seeing Kevin Nash fumble his way through dance routines and I'm still not sure if that was the actor or the character. Women, this is a must see!

I Could Watch TVD All Day
Posted : 13 years, 1 month ago on 17 November 2011 11:59 (A review of The Vampire Diaries)I love this show! I'm a huge CW fan to begin with and I resisted watching The Vampire Diaries for so long because it was a vampire show. I'm not huge into the genre even though I love Supernatural. I thought it would be over the top and trying too hard to be sexy and "dangerous" but I was wrong. This show has a lot less to do with the vampires than it does life in general although many of the issues are brought on by the supernatural beings in the show.
I'm so glad that they found Nina Dobrev for this show. She is perfect for the role and sexy as hell. I think she'll be a huge name if she plays her cards right. She does an amazing job playing both the Katherine and Elena roles. I love that she can be this sweet innocent Elena one minute and bad to the bone Katharine the next. Plus (and I'm a girl here) how hot does she look in Katherine's wardrobe.
Her real-life boyfriend Ian is just as amazing in his role though I find that he plays the same character in most of his roles (Lost, Smallville) that I'm beginning to wonder if he's as much of a douchebag as he plays. I'd like to find out. I know everyone thinks he's hot but he just doesn't do it for me but his looks really work for the character and I love how expressive he is. I like the Damon and Elena drama and I love the way Damon was before he turned into a vampire, very sweet, naive and innocent. It's such a change.
Paul Wesley is fantastic as Stefan especially during the parts where Stefan is acting out. I think Paul has a great range and he is really not bad on the eyes either. I like how caring he is towards Elena and they way they interact with each other and take care of each other even when the other doesn't want to be taken care of.
I think that the secondary characters really add a new level to the show. Kat Graham is good as Bonnie and I'd like to see more of her. I love Jeremy and Bonnie together so we'll see how that goes. Steven R. McQueen is adorable (I say this because I feel I'm too much older than him to call him hot) and I love his broody character, I think he pulls it off well. I want more Jeremy. Caroline is amazing and I loved what they did with Candice's character in season 2 when she was with Tyler. The whole storyline was compelling to me even though it wasn't supposed to be as important as the main story of the show. I just wish there would have been more drama with Matt. I like that they're keeping Zach's character human (at least for now) and that makes it much more interesting with more depth. He doesn't have a ring keeping him alive so he has much more to lose than Alaric and Jeremy. I can't wait to see what they do with him in the future.
The only major flub I saw was the way they handled Jenna's death. I'm not sure if it was because the actress wanted to leave or what but she was just gone without too much drama. I would have liked Alaric to go off the rails a little more or something. Overall, I think it should have been more traumatic for everyone involved but I have the feeling it had more to do with behind the scenes stuff than actual storyline.
I look forward to seeing more of season 3 and to see what they do with the addition of more supernatural entities.

Love It
Posted : 13 years, 1 month ago on 17 November 2011 11:46 (A review of One Tree Hill)I think One Tree Hill is my favorite show out there. I've watched every episode as it aired since the beginning. A lot of shows that I like I just can't keep up with (I have to download them all because I don't get the CW) and I end up losing track. With One Tree Hill I'm compelled to watch every one, even when there isn't a lot of drama happening. I think one of the major downfalls of the show is that the CW never knows if it's going to keep the show on the air or not and therefore all seasons have to end happily with a wrap up as to not disappoint the fans. If you look back to Seasons 1,2,3 you'll see a huge cliffhanger at the end of the season and before any of the major breaks, that is what makes the show interesting and watchable. Without knowing when it will end the cast and the writing staff don't give us as much to work with.
I do have to say that I was worried when Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton left the show, I thought it would surely end everything but with a great cast and crew this show continued. I also wasn't sure how the time skip would go but that seemed to work out well too. It seems to be the death of shows when the kids go to college but I would have liked to see how that went for everyone an they hardly ever talk about it. That's the same way they are about Lucas and Peyton, they only get a small mention and it's a little weird.
I think the best part of the show are the realistic portrayals of people, relationships and families. I think it's something we can all relate to. We might not all have a masochistic father or an alcoholic/drug abusing mother but we probably know someone who does. I think the relationships these kids had with their parents were amazingly complex and intricate. I love the Brooke and Victoria storyline so much because I know families like this and I see this stuff happening all the time, it really helps people to know they aren't alone.
My favorite character is Brooke and I could watch Sophia Bush do anything. I love how complex she is without being over the top like the Blair Waldorf character on Gossip Girl. Brooke is more realistic in her approach and she's very emotional without being too fake. Sophia does a great job in all her relationships to make them realistic and also heartwarming.
The relationship of Nathan and Hailey is great and continues to be dramatic even 8 years later. I love how they are with Jamie and I think that it shows the same dynamic that Lucas had with Karen. It is definitely how I'd want to be if I ever had children. They treat him with respect and dignity and he's always been a very fun character to watch.
I love the characters of Mouth and Skillz too. To some Skillz may be over the top with his street vernacular but I find it to be incredibly realistic having known people like this. He's kind of in the background but to me he really stands out. Mouth and Millie have always been the cutest couple and I like how they are "geeky and uncool" bringing some real-life into the whole thing. I think this pairing would work in the real world and that they do a great job of showing depth in a relationship.
Lastly I'm really enjoying the addition of Clay and Quinn and the way they added a new relationship to the scene when one had been taken away. They make sense as a couple and are completely different than any of the other couples on the show.
I can't wait to see how the show ends and I look forward to seeing these actors in other roles and to see what Marc Schwan does next.
